Bidding a Fond Farewell

Discover Glencoe bid a fond farewell to Melville after 30 years’ service at their 2015 Website Launch

Local Marketing Association, Discover Glencoe is operated by The Glencoe and Loch Leven Marketing Association.  The association was one of the first of its kind in Scotland and was formed just over 30 years ago in 1983 with just 11 member businesses.  The purpose of the association is to collaboratively promote the area as a vibrant destination for holiday makers and to ensure Glencoe and its surrounding area remains as one of the “must see” destinations on any holiday to Scotland.

Originally funded by a grant, this unique marketing association decided to undertake it’s own marketing for the area when funding ran out.  Initially, this centred on printed material producing a comprehensive Local Guide Book which ran for 5 editions.  Modern times have seen the introduction of the use of websites and  social media with Facebook, Twitter and Flickr accounts.  Discover Glencoe is one of first to use the new Scottish web domain, “dot.scot” .   January 2015 saw the re-launch of the Discover Glencoe website which features outstanding photographs and hosts information from the area including Accommodation, What’s On, Activities, Walks etc…  See www.discoverglencoe.scot .

Some of the founding members are still actively involved on the committee today, keenly promoting Glencoe.  One of the first members, Melville Paton, became the Treasurer in 1984 and later the association Secretary.    Melville has seen the association grow from the initial 11 members to 110 businesses today, and has served under 8 Chairmen/woman.   After a spell of 30 years of volunteer work with Discover Glencoe, Melville has stepped down as Treasurer and Secretary .  Discover Glencoe owe a great deal of thanks for Melville’s input and dedication over the years which built strong foundations for the association and its members.
