Discover Adventure at Action Glen

Action Glen

Recently, we were lucky enough to be invited along to the opening of Action Glen, the new adventure activity centre based at the Isles of Glencoe Hotel just outside Ballachulish in Lochaber.

As the Outdoor Capital of the UK, Lochaber boasts a wealth of outdoor activity providers, and based on what we saw at the open day, Action Glen looks set to be a fine addition to the bunch.

The evening started with an introduction to the centre, a talk on the activities currently on offer, and – something we’re big fans of – a buffet. It was a great change to chat and mingle with local businesses who had come along to find out what was on offer.

Action Glen at the Isles of Glencoe is actually the second Action Glen in the country, with the original being located in Crieff. While the Glencoe centre doesn’t yet offer everything the Crieff base does, there are plans to keep expanding and offering new activities.

Stand Up Paddling with Action Glen

A couple of adventurous souls – who had passed up the champagne on offer – took to the loch to try out some stand-up paddling. Meanwhile, those of us not looking to get our feet wet remained on dry land and had a bash at archery and air rifle shooting.

There are coaches on hand for each activity, ready to provide help and advice, and ensure everyone taking part remains safe at all times. Everything feels well organised, which is particularly reassuring if you’re there with a young family.

One of the first things that strikes you as you approach Action Glen at the Isles of Glencoe is the scenery. Even on a largely overcast evening, the view across Loch Leven is stunning.

The water looks genuinely inviting, and with a variety of both sit-down and stand-up water sports options available, there’s plenty of opportunity to get out on it.

I’ve already mentioned the archery and air rifle target shooting for those who prefer their activities a bit more land-based, and there’s also mountain bike hire available with various add-ons available for those looking to take babies and young children along for the ride.

Talking of the target shooting, special mention must go to Heather from Nevis Range, who demonstrated a quite terrifyingly accurate aim. Remind me never to get on her bad side…

While the range of activities is a little on the limited side at present compared with the Crieff centre, I don’t think it’ll be long before Action Glen grows to become one of the foremost providers of adventure in Lochaber – and all with a view to die for.
