Scenic Drive – Glen Orchy, Kilchurn Castle and St Conan’s Kirk

Scenic Drives

From Glencoe, take the A82 up through the Glen and onto Rannoch Moor. You will pass a turning for Glen Etive (another scenic drive you could add to your itinerary for the day) and on past the Glencoe Mountain Resort, Loch Ba and Bridge of Orchy.  Just past here a turning to the right (B8074) connects up to the Oban road via Glen Orchy.  It is a single track road which runs alongside the River Orchy – a very popular river with kayakers.  With numerous picnic spots and many interesting falls and pools in the river, this glen makes a worthwhile visit in itself, as well as offering a shortcut through to the main road to Oban.

A visit to Kilchurn Castle is just a short extension to the drive once you reach the end of the road where you will need to turn right. After 6km there is a small parking area on your left hand side, just after the turning for the A819. Park here and follow the footpath to wander around Kilchurn Castle (no entry charge).

Rejoin the A85 and head towards Oban where you’ll find St Conan’s Kirk on the left.  It is definitely worth a stop and a look inside.

Continue on a circular route through Oban or turn around and retrace your steps.
