Scenic Drives & Days Out
Activity Details
Cross the Ballachulish Bridge heading in the direction of Fort William, after five miles take the turning for the Corran ferry. Upon leaving the ferry turn left, following the other side of Loch Linnhe to the village of Ardgour. Continuing on under the dramatic slopes of Garbh Bheinn to Strontian, a short drive along the banks of Loch Sunnart you reach Salen. A left turn takes you onto the road to Ardnamurchan and the lighthouse at the most westerly point of the British mainland. This is a wonderful drive with numerous reasons to stop and explore along the way. Highly recommended is Sanna Bay.
Alternatively from Salen you can continue on the circular route to Acharacle, Glenuig, Lochailort, where you join the Mallaig to Fort William road. An alternative to returning via Fort William is to take the road which travels the south side of Loch Eil, back to Ardgour and back to the Corran Ferry.
Turning left before Strontian takes you down to Lochaline and the Morvern peninsula. Here you can catch a car ferry to Craignure on Mull. It is possible to drive over Mull and spend some time on Iona via this route and return the same day. You can also take the car across to Tobermory on Mull from Kilchoan ferry which is a few miles before the Ardnamurchan point.
